Better Home & Gardens tops AFL and NRL in Friday night battle

The Seven Network’s Friday night staple, Better Homes & Gardens, proved to be the most popular commercial show on a Friday night where news and the ABC’s Broadchurch led the ratings.

Better Homes & Gardens topped the commercial shows on Friday night.

The lifestyle show drew an average audience of 585,000 viewers at 7pm, short of the ABC show’s, 640,000 at 8.30pm, but enough to make it the most watched non-news show of the night on the commercial networks.

The second day of the new AFL season also delivered for Seven with 518,000 tuning in to the match between the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood on the main channel in Melbourne and Adelaide.

Nine’s NRL clash between the Brisbane Broncos and Canberra Raiders broadcast in Sydney and Brisbane at 7.30pm drew 422,000.

News dominated the night, with Seven news at 6pm catching 863,000 and Nine news at 6pm watched by 773,000.

Seven’s The Chase Australia at 5.30pm (534,000), and Nine’s A Current Affair at 7pm (449,000) rounded out the top ten shows.

Ten’s strongest performance came from its 5pm news bulletin with 433,000 viewers, and The Project at 7pm with 348,000 viewers.

In overall share the night was another where Ten finished behind the ABC with a share of 9.3% compared to the public broadcaster’s 11.9%.

Seven won the night comfortably with a share of 25.1% ahead of Nine’s 16.2%.
