Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon deliver Nine another ratings win

Nine’s The Big Bang Theory and its prequel Young Sheldon took the ratings lead on Tuesday night, as the only two entertainment shows pulling in more than 800,000 metro viewers.

The night was won by Young Sheldon, which attracted 986,000 metro viewers for its second episode. On Monday night, the show premiered with 1.053m metro viewers, topping OzTAM’s overnight preliminary ratings.

In addition to Young Sheldon, The Big Bang Theory – which inspired the prequel – achieved 822,000 metro viewers, beating Ten’s new season of Bondi Rescue, as well as Seven’s Border Security: America Front Line, which did not make the top 20.

Ten’s Bondi Rescue, which ran at the same time as The Big Bang Theory, attracted 550,000 for its second episode. The earlier episode had a metro audience of 449,000.

Later in the evening, Ten’s Hughesy, We Have a Problem grew by more than 200,000 viewers, up from 338,000 metro viewers last week to 559,000 metro viewers.

Outside of news, Seven’s most-watched program was Home and Away, with 641,000 metro viewers.

But Seven did dominate in news and current affairs, averaging 932,000 across the metro cities for its 6pm  news bulletin. That was ahead of Nine’s 861,000 in the same time slot.

ABC News pulled in 738,000 while Ten’s The Project’s second half-hour at 7pm managed a metro audience of 504,000.

Across the key advertising demographics, made up of the 16-39s, 18-49s and 25-54s, Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory also dominated. The biggest audiences for both shows came from the 25-54 demographic with 469,000 and 432,000 respectively.

SBS also appeared in the top 20 programs last night, with Insight raking in 357,000 metro viewers. On the multi-channels, it was ABC Kids’ Peter Rabbit which led Tuesday, with 153,000 viewers.

Nine obtained another win on Tuesday with a main channel share of 20.3%. Seven News helped the channel to a 16.4% share, slightly ahead of Ten’s 13.9%. ABC’s share was 12% and SBS had a share of 6.5%.

The official ratings period is currently on a two-week break for Easter, with the ratings season recommencing on 8 April.
