Big Bash continues to do well for Ten as Seven wins night with Coastwatch Oz

KFC Big Bash leagueAs January heats up the cricket continues to do well in the ratings, with last night’s Big Bash match between the Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers delivering a metro audience of 772,000 during session two for Ten.

It followed on from 700,000 viewers tuning in for sessions one from 7pm while 376,000 capital city and regional viewers stuck around for the post-game coverage, according to OzTam overnight metro ratings.

Session one was the most watched show amongst people aged 16-39, with session two the second most-watched show. Session two was the second most watched show amongst the 18-49 demographic and the third most-watched show amongst the 25-54 demographic.

It wasn’t enough for the match to claim the most watched non-news show of the evening, with Seven’s Coastwatch Oz grabbing those honours with a metro audience of 779,000, winning the 8pm timeslot and helping Seven win the night with an audience share of 19.5 per cent.

It out-rated Nine’s 60 Minutes which drew an audience of 547,000, contributing to Nine’s share of 15.8 per cent.

Ten narrowly held off the ABC for third place with an audience share of 13.9 per cent while the ABC settled for a share of 13.7 per cent.

On the ABC, Antiques Roadshows, which began at 7.40pm, was watched by 624,000 metro viewers while a repeat of the first ever episode of British drama Sherlock, on at 8.40pm, grabbed an audience of 653,000.

Seven’s Border Patrol, on at 7pm, was watched by 758,000 out-rating Nine’s RBT which grabbed an audience of 675,000.

In news Nine News won the night pulling an audience of 1.051m at 6pm, while Seven News settled for an audience of 954,000.

On the secondary channels, Ten’s One performed well due to airing the movie Taken 2 ahead of the premiere to the third Taken film on January 8. It was watched by 441,000 metro viewers at 8.30pm helping One to an audience share of 7.2 per cent.

Looking back to New Year’s Eve, the ABC’s broadcast of the midnight fireworks in Sydney was watched by 1.460m metro viewers, while the family fireworks at 9pm was watched by 1.041m.

The ABC’s coverage of the New Year fireworks came in for major criticism from hundreds of viewers and media outlets for the second year in succession with calls to relinquish the rights to a commercial broadcaster.

Also over the holiday period, Nine’s coverage of the third test between Australia and India saw the third session of each day prove the most popular, getting 1.298m metro viewers on Boxing Day, 1.303m on day two, 1.298m on day three, 1.298m on day four and 1.260m for the last session of the match on day five.
