The Block winner announcement beats My Kitchen Rules as biggest non-sport show of 2016

Channel Nine’s finale of The Block became the most-watched non-sports show of the year beating the finale of My Kitchen Rules with 2.104m people tuning in last night for the auction.

The audience for the moment young Queenslanders Will Bethune and Karlie Cicero were announced the winners was well up on last year’s auction finale which managed 1.8m viewers, and Seven’s MKR which had 1.969m for its winner announced segment this year.

Similarly the final full show also saw its audience swell to 1.712m, after managing 1.57m for for last year.

The overrunning of the show also had a knock-on effect, with OzTam overnight figures showing the controversial 60 Minutes interview with Gable Tostee, achieving an audience of 1.332m.

While those numbers for the show, which featured an exclusive interview with Tostee on his Tinder date’s death, are the program’s biggest audience numbers for 2016, they are likely to be revised down.

The Block’s finale and winning moments as well as 60 Minutes were in the top three spots across the key advertising demographics (16-39, 18-49, 25-54).

Seven’s Sunday Night was moved up to 7pm and featured an interview with Kerri-Anne Kennerley and her husband John, managing an audience of 770,000.

However it could not help the X Factor which aired at 8pm and saw its ratings dive after climbing last week, achieving an audience of 559,000 in the 8:00pm slot.

On the news front, Seven won the evening with 1.088m viewers, slightly ahead of Nine with 1.013m.

Ten’s repeat episodes of Modern Family captured audiences of 450,000 to the 7:30pm slot, and 412,000 to the 8pm slot.

Also in the same time frame as The Block, the ABC’s Grand designs, which aired at 7:41pm had an audience of 660,000.

In audience share, Nine won the night with 30.4% well ahead of Seven’s 16.8% . Ten could only manage 14.1%, the ABC 10.5% and SBS 3.7%.
