Strong opening for Bran Nue Dae

The first Australian film released in 2010, Rachel Perkins’ musical Bran Nue Dae, took more than $1.6 million at the box office during its first weekend.

With a campaign centred around the big screen debut of pop star Jessica Mauboy and a number of special screenings and live performances around the country, Bran Nue Dae defied expectations with opening results only second to Mao’s Last Dancer performance last year – and that went on to become the most successful local film of 2009.

The film, based on Jimmy Chi’s stage show and starring Rocky Mackenzie, Geoffrey Rush, Missy Higgins, Ernie Dingo and Magda Szubanski, opened at number six with $1,611,711.
