Breakfast and morning ratings race kicks off with return of Kerrie-Anne and end of Olympics

The ratings battle between breakfast and morning programs resumed this week following the end of the Vancouver Winter Olympics on Monday and the return of Nine’s Kerrie-Anne show.

On Tuesday, Kerrie-Anne Kennerley’s return in the 9am slot attracted an average audience of 125,000, behind Seven’s leading The Morning Show with 180,000, according to preliminary overnight OzTam data in the five main metropolitan markets.

Meanwhile, Ten’s new all-women’s chat show The Circle, which starts at 10am, came in third with 74,000 – a solid figure compared to the 78,000 it attracted during its launch episode early last month. It is also higher than the 68,000 average of its predecessor 9am with David and Kim.

However, yesterday saw The Circle’s ratings sink to 42,000. But there were falls all round for the morning shows, with Kerrie-Anne down to 89,000 and The Morning Show also down to 155,000.

Prior to the early morning broadcast of the Olympics, Nine aired Mornings with Kerri-Anne Summer Series, with Kennerley fronting the show by re-introducing segments and interviews that had previously been aired.

Elsewhere, among the breakfast shows Seven’s Sunrise led in every main metro market except Melbourne in yesterday’s ratings. It attracted 338,000, while Nine’s Today show, post-Olympic coverage, had 306,000.

In other results, Seven News was the most-watched program with 1.305 million viewers, followed by Criminal Minds with 1.264 million. Nine’s Customs followed closely with 1.247 million.
