Stephen Tait quits The Oz for APN
Stephen Tait has quit as The Australian’s commercial director, AdNews is reporting this afternoon. The move, to APN in Queensland, comes as something as a surprise – he was well regarded by the market and had been in the role for only about a year.
During that time his strategy was to reposition The Australian’s sales story as being one that offers advertisers an environment where readers are engaged and interested, and have a longer dwell time than in other titles.
Before The Australian, he was in Queensland when fellow News Ltd title the Brisbane Courier moved from broadsheet to a tabloid format. It had seemed a likely bet that he would follow suit with the Australian, as he had also been involved in a similar exercise when the Barclay Brothers’ Scotsman newspaper went tabloid.
He remained the public face of The Australian as recently as this time last week when he presented a trophy at the B&T Awards (scroll forward to 31:20).
