Broadsheet strengthens editorial team, appoints Australia editor
Lifestyle publication Broadsheet has promoted Nick Connellan to the newly-created role of Australia editor, as its national editor steps into a different role.
Connellan joined the publication in 2015 as directory editor, overseeing and maintaining several thousand venue listings across the country. He spearheaded Broadsheet’s expansion into Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in 2016, and later co-hosted the Around Town podcast.
In 2018, Connellan was promoted to publications director, managing quarterly print papers in Melbourne and Sydney, while he also edited three of Broadsheet’s hardcover books.
In the new role, he will oversee Broadsheet’s daily operations, including features, news, the directory, app and photography editors.

“For the past decade, Broadsheet and Nick have grown together. There are not many people that understand Australian culture as well as him,” said Nick Shelton, founder and publisher of Broadsheet.
“Combined with his deep knowledge of our audience and brand, I cannot imagine anyone better suited to lead Broadsheet’s editorial output.”
Connellan said of his promotion: “My time at Broadsheet has always been characterised by new challenges, and this is the most exciting, ambitious one yet.
“Google, Meta and other platforms are turning their backs on publishers, and we have to find more direct channels to engage and retain loyal readers with stories they can’t find elsewhere. I’m eager to meet that head-on.”
Connellan will continue reporting to Katya Wachtel, editorial director, upon her return from maternity leave, and will manage Broadsheet’s team of editors.
National editor Michael Harry and national assistant editor Emma Joyce have moved into features editor roles, with Harry’s remit being food and drink, fashion, active, and travel, and Joyce managing art and design, and entertainment.
The features they oversee will serve as headliners in Broadsheet’s regular themed digital issues.
