Brownlow Medal broadcast proves a winner for Seven with more than a million tuning in

Seven’s broadcast of the 2014 Brownlow Medal ceremony saw 1.048m viewers across Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth tune in to see Fremantle midfielder Nat Fyfe take out the AFL’s top award.

The broadcast was the second most-watched show of the night up on last year’s award ceremony which saw 983,000 viewers tune in. It kicked off at 8.15pm following on the red carpet arrivals segment which was watched by 676,000 from 7.30pm.

It also had 222,000 national viewers on pay-TV, easily beating NRL’s Dally M Awards broadcast which had 193,000 on Fox Sports last night with Queensland Cowboy’s Jonathan Thurston picking up the top award.

The awards ceremony helped Seven win the night with an audience share of 29.1 per cent, ahead of Nine’s share of 18.2 per cent. The ABC claimed third place with a share of 14.8 per cent while Ten settled for a share of 10.9 per cent.

Nine’s The Block, airing at 7.30pm, pulled in 947,000 and was the most-watched show across the key advertising demographics (16-39, 18-49 and 25-54). The Brownlow Medal ceremony was the second-most watched show across the demos.

Also in the 7.30pm timeslot, The Biggest Loser grabbed 552,000 metro viewers, up on last week’s audience of 514,000.

In Sydney and Brisbane, World’s Most Extreme Airports was watched by 352,000 viewers in the 7.30pm timeslot for Seven.

Nine’s local drama series House Husbands, airing at 8.40pm, pulled in 717,000 metro viewers, slightly down on last week’s audience of 752,000, out-rating Ten’s Have You Been Paying Attention? which saw 486,000 tune in.

On the ABC, 7.30 pulled in 779,000 metro viewers, Australian Story (8pm) grabbed 747,000 viewers, Four Corners (8.30pm) was watched by 740,000, Media Watch (9.20pm) saw 617,000 tune in and Q&A (9.30pm) was watched by 565,000.

In the news battleground, Seven News was watched by 1.153m at 6pm, sliding to 1.001m from 6.30pm while Nine News at 6pm grabbed 1.024m viewers, dipping to 1.009m from 6.3opm.

In breakfast TV, Seven’s Sunrise grabbed 318,000 viewers out-rating Nine’s Today Show which saw 291,000 metro viewers tune in for its broadcast from WA as it started its We Love Australia tour. Only 27,000 Perth viewers tuned in to Today, with 40,000 Perth viewers opting for Sunrise.
