Bulldogs’ fairytale win delivers more than three million viewers for Seven

The fairytale finish to the 2016 AFL Grand Final for the Western Bulldogs also proved a fairytale finish for the Seven Network after more than three million viewers tuned in to make the clash with the Sydney Swans the most watched Grand Final in a decade.

afl-grand-finalDelivering the match its highest audience since 2006, a total of 3.039m watched the thrilling contest that see-sawed throughout before the Bulldogs finally took control late in the final term.

The broadcast added a further 81,000 viewers for the emotional post match presentations.

Seven’s broadcast dominated the day, with not a single AFL-related session drawing an audience of fewer than 1m.

In Melbourne 1.446m tuned in for the match while 534,000 watched in Sydney, 372,000 in Perth, 370,000 in Brisbane and 318,000 in Adelaide.

Seven even managed to own the evening with the Big Music Quiz drawing 887,000 across the five metro markets.

The Grand Final topped off a winning week for Seven’s main channel which won with a share of 21.3% over Nine’s 19.1% and Ten’s 12.3%.

The ABC recorded a weekly share of 12% and SBS finished with a 4.7% share.

Nine’s top rating show of the week was The Block on Sunday night with 1.165m viewers, while Ten’s best performer was Tuesday night’s Australian Survivor with 691,000.

The ABC’s Wednesday night Gruen pulled 795,000.

With Seven riding high on the Grand Final success, it reported a combined metro and regional audience of 4.089m with a peak of 5.160m across the country for the match.
