BWM busted talking up their own work
Ever been suspicious when a lame piece of creative goes up on a blog and there are loads of effusively positive anonymous comments?
The chaps at Bannerblog were when they put up the (somwhat average) latest work by BWM on behalf of Big Pond on their site.
While some comments were unsurprisngly critical: “this campaign makes me cringe – weak concept. bigpond don’t understand music nor how to market it”, one person was particularly enthusiastic. According to “Sarah”:
“Wow that’s awesome. I’ve seen the Rock to Disco one too, pretty cool.”
Embarrassingly for BWM, Bannerblog posted the following message: “Hey Sarah, you realise your IP is visible to us. http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/203.49.171.174 Oops :)”
Always slightly awkward when one is caught praising one’s own campaigns. If only Campaign Brief started doing the same thing…
this is not the first time an agency has done this. At least they just did one. Another agency (european based) posted about 20 comments previously.

I’m constantly amazed at how many people who work in Digital and Online don’t realise simple web concepts such as IP tracking….

They are, as said in a previous comment ,pretty stupid not knowing about IP address or alternatively not caring and using it as a strategy to get some noise/pr about a very average campaign that otherwise would of gained no PR traction. Similar in vain to the Witchery/Naked campaingnand to an extent the CBA/Goodyby Silversteiin TVCs which would otherwise of gone unnoticed.

The comment came from a younger member of the team. She does traffic, not creative or account service so was not involved in the creation of the campaign.
Wasn’t trying to deceive….just loves the work..
I don’t believe in censoring our people…it’s what the internet is all about.
There is nothing wrong with our staff being proud of their agency’s work.
I will however ask our staff to ensure that they make it clear that they are employed at BWM when commenting in future. No one from BWM instructed her or advised her to post this comment.

Re Rob Belgiovane’s comments – nobody outside the agency in question can verify what is claimed, other than there being nothing wrong with an enterprise – or anybody else, being ‘proud of their work’. So it’s pointless really for Rob to include the comments about nobody asked her to. As for “I will however ask …” – now that bit is different. Ethics say you declare an interest. Perhaps Bob should instruct, rather than ask.

Maybe every agency should folllow Telstra’s new rules of engagement for their staff – it’s okay to join in the conversation, but you’ve got to state your allegiance. I think that’s what Belgo is saying. Good for him.
