Cam Hoelter to leave CHE Proximity after six months as ECD

CHE Proximity’s executive creative director (ECD) Cam Hoelter is leaving the business after just six months, Mumbrella can reveal.

Hoelter was hired in the wake of Wesley Hawes’ departure in September and took up the role two months later.

The role at CHEP marked Hoelter’s return to Australia from New York where he was the SVP and executive creative director at McCann. Hoelter previously spent five years at DDB Sydney before taking up the ECD role at DDB New York in 2016.

CHE Proximity CEO Justin Hind commented to Mumbrella that Hoelter was leaving to ‘focus his energy on something different’ and noted that the Sydney creative department will remain stable.

“Cam has done a brilliant job for us in Sydney and has contributed significantly to the team and new business, with Tourism Australia’s recent retail campaign as testimony to his creative leadership here in Sydney,” Hind said.

“Cam decided a while ago that he wanted to focus his energy on something different which we support, and we wish him well on his next chapter. Cam is remaining engaged with the agency during this transition phase, and we’ve already developed a view on how and who will lead the Sydney creative department under Gavin McLeod’s leadership in partnership with Glen Dickson.”

Hoelter told Mumbrella: “I’ve had a great time CHEP but some weeks ago I decided I wanted to focus on a different challenge. In the meantime, I’ll be hanging around to help with the transition. It’s a great agency with great leadership and I look forward to watching their continued success.”

The spree of leadership changes at the top of CHE Proximity kicked off when it was announced that CEO Chris Howatson and national CCO Ant White would be leaving the business to set up their own agency, Howatson + White.

Hind was appointed CEO a month later.

Recently-appointed national chief creative officer Gavin McLeod is due to start on 1 July. At the time McLeod’s appointment was announced, Glen Dickson was promoted from ECD to deputy chief creative officer.

Last week, it was announced that CHE Proximity had appointed Jonny Berger managing partner.
