Caramelised news
While Dr Mumbo has nothing against home page takeovers, he wonders whether news.com.au might be better advised to turn off today’s one for Mars.
One suspects that readers looking for information about Christchurch’s earthquake disaster may not be in the mood to be interrupted by news of the launch of a new chocolate bar.
Perhaps not… I suppose it could have been in poorer taste if Mars were releasing a ‘creamy’ chocolate bar.

No takeovers during a crisis? They’ve got to earn somehow.

These things are bought on sponsorship basis. Having a buyout when any sort of natural disaster hits is digital media paydirt. Great work, Mars team.

OTPs are rubbish anyway – too expensive, too annoying

Yeah it could be worse.. like if it were ‘Crushed’ biscuit or something that vaguely relates to the crisis

Really clutching at straws to find any offense here. Yes it is an OTP, yes you could vaguely relate it as an abstract metaphor to an earthquake. Is anyone going to find this completely offensive? No.

@Les – agree entirely – it’s the height of intrusive advertising and keeps me firmly on the ABC news site.

Crunchie would have been a better product strategy not Mars bar

I was born in Christchurch and I’m appalled!!!
But if Mars sent me a case of caramel Mars Bars I’d be a lot less appalled.

Hope the media agency put a cap on adserving.. a sponsorship serving RM on an unexpectedly high traffic day could end up costing them in adserving fees!

70% of the news.com.au would have been exposed to the ad prior to the event before the publisher controlled freq. caps kick in.
RSS and ad blockers are a good alternative to homepage interruptions.

I think the folks at Expedia are slightly more remiss in having just (now) sent out a newsletter to their Australian database with the subject ‘Hurry: New Zealand 72hr sale ends soon’, and a lead image of the Christchurch Cathedral. Admin, email me for a copy.

I tried a caramel Mars in high excitement and anticipation.
It tasted just like a regular Mars bar with only the caramel.
I’m not sure what I expected, but I was very bitterly disappointed.

It’s not related to the top, and only 8 seconds, so not that much of an issue. My concern is with pre roll video ads on new articles, espaically in a disaster – anyone else think this is off?
