Cheuk Chiang back in Australian fold with Dentsu Creative APAC role

Former regional Omnicom Media Group CEO, and former chairman of Mutiny, Cheuk Chiang has been appointed as CEO of Dentsu Creative in the Asia Pacific region.

Chiang has been at Dentsu International since 2019, joining as CEO in the Greater North region, which includes China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Korea. He has also been serving as chairman of Dentsu China, and on the APAC executive team.

The move comes now as the Japanese group looks to further define its creative offering, with the foundation of Dentsu Creative in Cannes last month. Dentsu said this move was made in order to accelerate its creative footprint to be a future-ready creative partner for the world’s biggest brands.

Chiang will report into new Dentsu APAC CEO, Robert Gilby, and global chief creative officer at Dentsu, Fred Levron. He will be based in Shanghai for the role.

Levron appeared on the Mumbrellacast last month, alongside local Dentsu Creative CEO, Kirsty Muddle last month to speak about the new brand and offering while in Cannes. Muddle will also now report to Chiang.

On Chiang’s appointment, Levron said: “At Dentsu Creative we have set a bold ambition for ourselves – owning Horizontal Creativity, a modern approach to creativity which infuses every part of our company to provide the most integrated solutions to our clients. To be able to deliver on this promise we need not only a new generation of creatives, but also business leaders. Individuals who are obsessed by creative excellence, and have the unique experience necessary to accelerate creativity through media and tech. Cheuk is exactly this. Asia Pacific is a key region for Dentsu Creative and I am excited to have him by my side to reinvent the way we build brands and businesses here.”

Chiang added: “The way consumers interact with brands is far more sophisticated than it used to be. In this complex environment, every marketer wants their brand to communicate consistently; to speak with one voice across all consumer touchpoints and experiences. The challenge they face is finding a simple integrated solution that embraces the full richness of the modern marketing landscape.”

“Dentsu Creative is perfectly positioned to deliver on this need through modern creativity and seamless integration across the Dentsu network, connecting the right talent around the right brief to deliver end to end solutions to our clients’ problems. I look forward to working closely with the teams in how we can shape the future of creativity for our business.”

Dentsu said it created the new global division, doing away with all its individual creative and PR brands in order to address clients’ “need for simplicity”.  “Its role will be pivotal in driving ideas that transform brands and businesses through the lens of Modern Creativity, to deliver ideas which Create Culture, Change Society and Invent The Future,” the group said.

Chiang’s career has seen him in leading roles such as PHD APAC CEO, MD of Cummins & Partners, alongside his Mutiny and OMG roles, and his current position at Dentsu.

Dentsu continues to overhaul its local, and global operation, largely focusing on its creative function, and CXM business, Merkle this year. Questions remain over the future setup of its media business, Dentsu Media locally following Sue Squillace’s recent departure, with former Mediabrands boss Danny Bass tipped to take on the role next month.

The move is yet to be confirmed by Dentsu, which is also expected to reveal the successor to ANZ CEO, Angela Tangas in due course, with her move to London imminent.
