Clemenger BBDO Melbourne drives away with BMW Group creative account

Mumbrella can reveal that BMW Group has reappointed Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and Colenso BBDO as its creative lead agencies in Australia and New Zealand.

The win comes following a competitive pitch process, as Mumbrella understands the Clemenger Group agency beat out Special Group and IPG Regional Team Dynamic.

Clemenger BBDO was originally appointed by BMW in 2018, after the auto brand ended its two-decade-long partnership with Ogilvy a few months prior.

Both Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and Colenso BBDO will continue to partner with BMW Group to “support the growth of the BMW and Mini brands in Australia and New Zealand, well into the future”, the agency said.

Group CEO of Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, Jim Gall, told Mumbrella: “We’ve enjoyed a fantastic relationship with the BMW Group Australia team since we first partnered with them four years ago, and couldn’t be happier to be extending that relationship and continuing the great work we have been doing.”

Last month, BMW Australia appointed Alex McLean as its new general manager for marketing. He replaced Tony Sesto, who departed BMW after 12 years at the company.

Just over a year ago, Atomic 212 won BMW Group’s media account, the indie winning out against Mediabrands’ Initiative and Group M’s Wavemaker in the closed pitch.

The win is a welcomed one for Clemenger to start off 2022. 2021 was highlighted by the loss of long-term client, NAB, which ended a 15-year relationship moving across to TBWA/Melbourne. This came shortly after the latter lost its ANZ business to Special Group.

Clemenger BBDO Melbourne won Swisse Wellness last year, as well as YMCA Victoria and expanding its partnership with the AFL.
