Coles appoints Jon Church as head of communications
Supermarket giant Coles has appointed former Tesco media director of 10 years Jon Church as head of communications.
Church joined Coles 18 months ago as head of consumer PR and publishing.
His appointment brings together corporate media relations and internal communications, with the consumer PR team. The combined teams will report to Church, who will in turn will report to Robert Hadler, GM of corporate affairs.
Church said: “We work with a small number of agencies across the communications function. Earlier this year we ran a competitive pitch for our main consumer PR agency – which was won by Thrive PR. Apart from seeking some additional local PR support at State level there are no planned changes as a result of my appointment.”
His career includes a stint as senior information officer at the Department of Trade and Industry and head of press desk at the UK’s Prison Service.
He added: “This is a great opportunity to align all of our communication across Coles and build on our fresh new customer campaigns such as Down Down and Feed Your Family. By bringing together the talent we have within the business we can do much more to communicate the benefits the new Coles brings to Australian families.”
Well…yet another Tesco guy at Coles. Will Coles be changing its name to Tescoles soon?

He’s got some work to do, given Coles’ current beer-gate issues…

It became Tesco several years ago. Unless you are from the UK you know nothing

Anyone who’s lived OS knows how woeful Australia’s supermarkets were (and largely still are) compared to many other models.
So no surprise they felt they had t import intelligence. I just hope they take the good, as well as (IMO) the bad from the Tesco model.
Seems so far it’s mostly about screwing the supplier, ramping up own-brand, and competing on price.
