Coles offers diggers 10% off
Supermarket giant Coles has joined VB as a topical advertiser around Anzac Day with an offer of 10% savings for Australian soldiers and their families.
The campaign is a direct response from Coles MD Ian McLeod to an appeal made last week on Melbourne’s Triple M Hot Breakfast show by show host Mick Molloy.
Molloy called for all Australians to get behind our troops after a visit he made to an Australian military base in Afghanistan.
The offer, which launched today, does not extend to alcohol or tobacco products.
It runs until 9 April 2012.
The copy reads: “Seeing what a great job our Diggers are going was a moving experience. Being apart over the holidays is tough on their families so let’s show them some support this Easter.”
McLeod said in a press release: “I was touched and inspired by Mick’s description of the amazing job Australian troops are doing in Afghanistan. As Mick said it’s also tough on the families left behind which is why I hope our 10% discount will make this Easter just a little easier for these families. This is just one small way of saying thanks on behalf of our 100,000 team members around the country to all those Australians who are serving or have served their country.”
Yesterday, VB launched a campaign to bring together the families of the diggers pictured in the image of twelve Anzacs that inspired its original Raise A Glass campaign.
They should have hammed it up even more by have an easter bunny, dressed in an army soilder’s garb and carrying a gun. Yep that’d really tie in the festive season and craziness of it all.

It seems like the mentality of the moratorium days of the early 70’s still exist with Sue Lee. As the word Defence implies, we defend our country and play a deterrent role by our mere existence – we are not aggressors but protectors against oppression and support human rights. However our Defence Force goes further than just your IQ or eyesight, why don’t you ask the East Timorese or the Solomon Islanders and the other subjugated woman, children and men from the countries we have assisted. Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, Rhodesia, Iran are further good examples, just to name a few, then again you can always go back to the country you came from with your bigotry and naivety. I say well done boys and girls for your contribution at the behest of the government of the day and thanks to the companies like Coles for their patriotism because I can tell you the government freely doesn’t, we often need to re-fight to justify our claims.

I would have more respect if they did this 24/7 52

I hope they are supporting Airmen and Sailors as well.

Real patriotism would be giving them a discount on the booze too!

I feel extremely uneasy about this.
ANZAC day and commerce have no business together.
Exploiting jingoism and nationalism to promote your brand, especially at a time set aside to highlight the meaning of war is wholly atrocious.
Diggers haven’t died for cheaper groceries at Coles.

They give us their lives, and Coles gives them 10%.

So I misunderstood the campaign a little… it’s just Easter, not ANZAC day… oh well, Diggers and Jesus didn’t die for cheaper groceries at Coles!

Discrimination.

Not good enough Coles! You are still a major sponsor of Channel Ten! You failed to call for the dismissal of Yumi Stynes and George Negus. I doubt many Diggers would care if you were giving away groceries for free!

ANZAC Day is no fly zone for advertising. Unless Legacy is asking for money. End of story.

Oh the sarcasm must be lost on you Geoff, shame you weren’t given that gene or is it a racist thing that you have going on? I do have family and friends represented in our military forces but if Coles were really “true blue” why isn’t it offered all year around and why just at Easter? Why not every public holiday or Christmas? Why not on ANZAC Day?

Personally, I think the entire ploy is a bit of a joke.
First of all, it’s 10%. That’s pittance unless it also applies to sale items, and even then it’s a bit of a stretch.
Secondly, why only Easter? Members of the Defence Forces are usually away from their families for more than just the Easter weekend.
And finally, why are the Defence Forces so special? There are plenty of other professions that require you to be away from the ones you love at inopportune times of the year.
As a side note, doesn’t it seem slightly ironic that we’re giving a 10% discount to the Defence Forces? I understand the whole ‘patriotism’ thing, but, correct me if I’m wrong, don’t the defence forces make a considerable amount of money each year?

No one in the Defence Force, ‘looks for or ask for a handout’, it’s a JOB we do Sue Lee and every member will tell you the same. I am neither stupid nor non compos mentis and if you wish to put a commercial twist to it, then direct your comments to the business fraternity because ‘an army soldier’s garb and carrying a gun’ has the connotation of a killer which I’m sure that your family or friends would not appreciate. I put to you how about a picture of, ‘a medical serviceman or woman assisting or counselling or an Army engineer with tools in the hand rebuilding some ones life and community.’ And if a donation or support is obtained through the publics generosity by the sale a badge or a poppy or is received commercially, I say thank you but if it doesn’t come that’s fine as well.

Better groceries than beer.
One can only hope that Coles might advertise on television that the discount is not redeemable on alcohol or tobacco – get some proper egg on face happening for VB who (let’s be honest) have crossed the line.
