Commonwealth Games to overturn ban on Nine after opening ceremony

The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will lift Nine’s media accreditation ban tomorrow morning, after the opening ceremony.

Nine was suspended from the event two days ago after Sunday night’s Nine News showed footage of an opening ceremony rehearsal.

Nine’s media accreditation was suspended two days ago

The Commonwealth Games had been attempting to keep details of the ceremonyt under wraps to maximise the impact of the commencement this evening. It will be broadcast from 7pm tonight on Seven.

At the time, Nine said the footage was an “error”, telling Mumbrella it was in discussions with the Commonwealth games authorities to resolve the issue and have the accreditation restored.

Gold Coast Commonwealth Games chairman Peter Beattie told the Gold Coast Bulletin earlier this week it was “disappointing” and a “breach of trust”.

“The important thing is, in these circumstances, when there is a matter of trust, we don’t want to see it broken. If too much gets out it just ruins it and we don’t want to do that.”

But a Nine spokesman confirmed today media accreditation will be returned to the broadcaster following the ceremony: “We have received correspondence advising the accreditation will be resumed at 8am Thursday.”
