Cookbook coincidences
Weight Watchers might have selected a slightly lower profile inspiration than the Donna Hay cookbook when it was looking for design ideas.
Particularly as Donna Hay was quick to post a comparison on its Facebook page, saying: “It’s interesting to see where some designers find their inspiration… totally busted!”
Dr Mumbo suspects that the Donna Hay recipes will taste better too.

I wouldn’t bet on it. Donna Hay cookbooks are awful, exercises in bland, tasteful design rather than actual recipes you might want to cook and eat. A lot of her recipes are so simple they sacrifice all flavour, and many just don’t work at all. That’s why she’s a “food stylist”, rather than an actual chef or cook

Bob Loblaw: I cook Donna Hay all the time, and while about 15% of the recipes are complete misses, most are pretty good. And frankly, they work perfectly for the majority of Australians who want something a little bit classier than Women’s Weekly, but not to the level of Anthony Bourdain. Don’t be such a food purist – we live in the wrong country for that.

And after Donna Hay’s mean-spirited appearance on Junior Master Chef who cares what she says and does? Much more talented people than her were able to find good things to say but she was downright nasty to the kids.
I certainly won’t be buying any more of her merchandise …

More to the point, I would imagine a designer worked very hard on that cover concept and its execution and it’s their work being lazily ripped off. Regardless of what you think of Donna or her cooking, creative plagiarism should be damned wherever it may come from. Here’s to more public shaming of copyright infringement!

People being mean to contestants is one of my absolute favourite components of any reality television, and this sentiment only amplifies when children are involved.
Horses for courses, I guess!

Thanks for posting this and so many other examples of, erm, designs that were inspired by previous designs. It seems to be all to common. When people are charging money to create original work, but instead are merely copying something they saw elsewhere, that strikes me as something akin to fraud.
