Could Optus announce a new CEO by Christmas?

On the latest episode of the Mumbrellacast, the team looked back on another controversial week for Optus, which saw Kelly Bayer Rosmarin resign from her CEO position.

In recent weeks on the podcast, Mumbrella publisher Adam Lang asserted that resignations alone might not be the answer to the backlash the telco received following this month’s nationwide outage.

However, Lang doesn’t think we’ll have to wait long for the new head, which could possibly even be made by Christmas.

“I think [Optus will] want to move quickly,” Lang said.

“There’ll be an element of time that needs to be consumed to make sure it’s the right person. You’d like to think that’s probably someone who’s run a telco, because they’re complex beasts… someone should come with industry experience.”

Lang also discussed contenders for the CEO position, in particular, former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, who has been reported as one of the names in the running.

“I think there’s a question mark there because there’s just no experience in running that operation,” Lang said.

“That’s not to say that she cannot do it. She could. I think as a public figure, on the plus side, you’ve seen her have a great reputation through COVID and that came to a sudden crash when there were investigations underway and allegations that she did not behave in a matter consistent with the office.

Lang concluded: “… where she’s at right now, I don’t know that the balance would be in favour of Gladys Berejiklian being the strongest candidate.”
