Could we replace entertainment journos with robots?
Radio host Jules Lund had some interesting words for the world’s entertainment reporters, comparing them to robots during a gameshow today.
Lund was one of the competitors on the Game for Change gameshow panel at the Mumbrella360 conference when the topic of algorithms which automatically create articles based on pre-determined events, such as an earthquake.
Likening that to entertainment journalists he quipped: “They wake up, see a celebrity tweet, copy, paste, and publish.”
He continued: “They are human bots. They’re not breaking stories, they’re just going on a social feed, ripping everything from on there, and hitting print.
“They’re not even going out to events anymore.”
Studio 10 and the Kyle and Jackie O Show breakfast show entertainment reporter Richard Reid was another contestant on the panel and jibed back “Wow… said the man from Scoopla!”.
Lund joined Southern Cross Austereo’s Hits Network nightly entertainment show which covers “the world of entertainment and pop culture” from 6pm each weekday, in February .
Lund was a member of the Game for Change panel at the Mumbrella360 conference in Sydney, which was moderated by PHD’s head of strategy and planning Chris Stephenson.
Other panelists on the gameshow style panel were Australian Women’s Weekly editor in chief Helen McCabe who reassured journalists their jobs are safe in long-form content as algorithms can’t be used to create that in good quality, broadcaster Paul Murray, and PHD strategy director Krisztian Zvara.
The irony makes my head hurt. How much actual reporting does Jules Lund do these days as host of The Scoopla? Or as it should be known, TMZ 24 hours ago. How much reporting has he ever done? Isn’t his commercial radio job essentially to voice the material collected by a team of producers? Pot, kettle, black.

Sorry Jules, but Richard Reid nailed it. When did you ever source content (that wasn’t from Daily Mail, E! News or TMZ).
