Crimson Peak and Legend top new entries as The Martian continues to dominate box office

The Martian continued to dominate the box office over the weekend taking nearly three times its nearest rival The Intern as its takings topped $17m in Australia.

Guillermo Del Torro’s fantasy horror film Crimson Peak was the highest new entrant taking $838,563, ahead of latest Kray twin biopic Legend which stars Tom Hardy in both lead roles, which managed $732,630.

Ridley Scott film The Martian took $3.16m on the weekend on 570 screens, while The Intern was second with $1.126m on 294 screens. Both films topped the box office last weekend.

Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Black Mass, which also stars Aussie Joel Edgerton, pulled in $592,976 on 257 screens, half the box office it managed in its opening weekend.

Another new film The Walk, about high-wire artist Philippe Petit’s epic bid to walk between the World Trade Centre towers, took $524,573 on 461 screens.
