Returning to the US: Ilic

The A Rational Fear founder is joining the team as the executive producer for comedy and will lead the comedy video pod.

Speaking to Mumbrella Ilic said: “Fusion is a millennial news network that gives voice to under-served voices in America. It’s all about inclusivity. It’s been around for a few years now and is a co-production between Univision and ABC America.

“It’s like Vice without testosterone,” he quipped.

“The job is really exciting. It’s an opportunity to use all the tools and resources of Univision and Fusion to pave a new path forward for satirical comedy in the digital space. I’m looking forward to building a digital comedy product not only for digital but also for TV and to collaborate with the team there to create some great content.”

Ilic will be based in Los Angeles for the role, which he expects will be his base for at least the next two years.

“I’m getting married to Fusion, we’re going to have a nice little house and make a bunch of little offspring together,” he laughed.

Ilic said the election will be his primary target when he moves into the role next week.

“Heading into this election, my first big job is to make jokes at the Republican National Convention. A lot of people are threatening to leave America is Donald Trump becomes president, not me, I’m heading in the opposite direction because let’s face it, if that happens, house prices are going to be cheap,” he said.

“My job will be to try and find things the media is trying to scare America with and then make America laugh at it.

It is not the first time Ilic has ventured to the US, he spent the first six months of 2015 with Al Jazerera as the senior satire producer for AJ+, a role he was fired from for using company resources in a video application for The Daily Show.

“A lot of the things I learnt at AJ+ I’ve incorporated into a lot of stuff I’ve done with clients in Australia. In my time here I worked closely with Fairfax Media and their video unit to get it cracking, that’s been really fun. Many of those lessons I’ll be taking to Fusion as well,” Ilic said.

“Fusion is an interesting place, right now there’s quite a few people there from AJ+ and that’s how I got the job.”
