David Gerrie takes on chief operating officer role to unite Ikon’s disparate offices
Media agency group Ikon has moved to put in place a de facto national head with David Gerrie stepping up to the role of chief operating officer.
Gerrie, currently the group’s chief financial officer, will report into STW Communications CEO Michael Connaghan, with responsibility for all Ikon marketing, operations and services, as well as aligning their investments.
The agencies in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland have all been run separately by their individual managing partners since the departure of James Greet earlier this year.
Connaghan said: “In reality David has been carrying out much of this role for a while now. Ikon Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne have all had strong growth this year. David’s official appointment is recognition of the fact that Ikon now has a much larger footprint in Australia.
“We need to harness the benefit of having strong managing partners in each office that can work together and share the load of developing the Ikon offer. David is the perfect guy.”
Ikon’s Sydney office has seen the most change in recent months with STW rolling Moon Communications and Shift into its operations to create a full-service offering, as the holding company looks to consolidate some of its underperforming agencies.
Gerrie said of his new role: “I have always had a passion for working with like-minded business leaders to create high performing work places and companies. I am incredibly excited to help lead the Group into its next phase of growth tied with operational excellence.”
Gerrie has worked in the finance side of agencies for 20-years including stints at George Patterson Bates, ZenithOptimedia and Starcom Mediavest Group, which he left in 2010 to join Ikon.

Wonder how is that STW consolidation is going? Quoting the big man at the top back in June – “I think with what we’re doing we’ll get from 80 to 50 and we’ll be there by the end of this year.”
30 days left, and little has been seen or said on the consolidation front…. aside from the Ikon/Moon/Shift. 47 to go?
