Tickets are now on sale for the 2025 Women in Media National Conference, taking place Friday, 15 August 2025, at ICC Sydney and a heavy-hitting headline session has just been announced: ‘DEI, Quotas and Backlash’

A powerful panel exploring one of the most contested topics in public life today. This timely discussion will unpack the political pressures and cultural shifts influencing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in Australia’s media and public institutions. From the corridors of Parliament to national boardrooms and workplace watercooler chat, DEI policy and practice is being redefined and fiercely debated.

Session Speakers:

  • Senator the Hon. Katy Gallagher
Federal Minister for Finance, Women, the Public Service and Government Services
  • Paula Kruger
    CEO, Media Diversity Australia
  • Charlotte Mortlock
Founder and executive director, Hilma’s Network

Moderated by Tanya Hosch, a respected leader in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advocacy, inclusion, and governance – and the first Indigenous person and second woman to join the AFL’s Executive. Tanya was also named South Australian of the Year in 2021.

“DEI has become one of the most contested ideas in public life – praised, criticised, politicised,” said Kym Middleton, general manager of Women in Media Australia. “Our audience wants to hear from those on the frontline of policy and culture about how it’s shaping behind‑the‑scenes decisions that impact each of us.”
