Lexus’ so-called bushfire tribute; Ping pong at Adtech
A somewhat crass press release has dropped on Dr Mumbo’s desktop from Text Pacific’s Lexus magazine.
Promoting its next edition, it claims: “In this issue, following the devastation of Victoria’s bushfires, Lexus, in our own way, pays tribute to this remarkable state. Strap yourself in for a weekend away through Victoria’s historic Alpine region in Lexus’ first high-performance vehicle – the IS F. As we take in the power and the beauty of both the region and the vehicle, we are reminded that we can all help ensure life returns to normal by simply paying a visit and enjoying the rich bounty this region has to offer.”
And did this “tribute” go to press before or after the bushfires, Dr Mumbo wonders?
The Adtech conference kicks off tomorrow – where the digital industry will spend two days trying to figure out if there’s actually any way of making money from social media, among other topics. And the early prize for the most original way to drum up visitors to their stand goes to DGM.
The seach company has hired Aussie Olympic table tennis player Kyle Davis to take on allcomers on its stand. Boss Fionn Hyndman post rationalises: “”The way we approach table tennis is very similar to how we approach our work as online marketing experts.”
Mumbrella readers are invited to offer their own interpretations of what that means.
Oh come on Dr Mumbo I said more than that :o)
“In today’s economic environment marketers are being challenged internally and externally to deliver the best possible results we can, and by using a fun element we want to show we can help them with their challenge.”
Not everything has to be doom and gloom contrary to many of the people watching the advertising space, if we can have some fun whilst we work with people to do what they do better then it works for us all.
And I hope to see you on the table.

I was trying to save you from yourself, Fionn… Fortunately you’d never use such marketing jargon in the real world. Would you…?
I, for one, commend DGM for finally melding the strategy, finesse and mental stamina of table tennis with the challenges of digital media. Bravo and see you on the pine.
