DR MUMBO: You never know who’s listening

Writing in the SMH’s business section today, Elizabeth Knight reveals that last night she was able to listen in on a dial-in briefing to Rio Tinto’s management team after being misconnected.  

And Dr Mumbo can reveal that it’s not the only recent case where brands give journalists more insights than they mean to.

Last week, Dr Mumbo had a curious call. His phone rang, and he could hear a muffled discussion. He was able to listen to a spinner from a large Australian telco making various phone calls regarding a news outlet which had posted a story the company was unhappy with. The spinner was getting advice on how much he could publically say about the financial settlement involved. Sadly the call was cut off as abruptly as it began, before the juicy details emerged.
