Oscar potential for King’s Speech

Australian/UK co-produced period drama The King’s Speech has debuted to critical acclaim at the Telluride Film Festival.

Featuring Colin Firth, Guy Pearce, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham-Carter, The King’s Speech is screening alongside six other Australian films at the Toronto Film Festival.

Tipping the film as a potential awards winner, The Hollywood Reporter enthused:

“Make no mistake, this movie has best picture and best actor nominations written all over it. And maybe best screenplay, best director and best supporting actor too.”

And Tim Appelo from US film industry website IndieWire reports:

“The big worship winner and potential Oscar magnet I’ve seen so far at Telluride 2010 is the world premiere of Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech.”

Deadline Hollywood‘s Pete Hammond also shared the sentiment:

“The film itself is a strong Best Picture prospect to say the least. Harvey Weinstein is back in the Oscar game with this one, no doubt.”

Producer Emile Sherman said: “The film is a real collaboration between the UK and Australia. It’s about an Australian who plays a truly key, but generally unknown, role on the world stage.  As a production company which spans both Australia and the UK, See-Saw Films is thrilled that this story is exciting audiences.”

The King’s Speech will also screen at the London Film Festival next month.
