Elle’s editor in chief Justine Cullen to depart

The woman who has been at the helm of Elle magazine since its launch in Australia, Justine Cullen, will depart at the end of the month.

The media statement from Bauer Media does detail Cullen’s next move, but said deputy editor Generva Leek will step up to be acting editor in chief for Elle.

Cullen will depart at the end of the month

Cullen has been with publisher Bauer Media for 10 years, having previously edited the now defunct Shop ‘Til You Drop magazine.

Fiorella Di Santo, Bauer Media’s general manager of publishing, said Cullen’s contribution to both Elle and the publishing industry had been significant.

“Since launching Elle five years ago, Justine has won PA Cover of the Year and has also secured consecutive year-on-year readership increases. She has continued ton innovate and bring new ideas that keep the industry fresh while also delivering engaging content that inspires readers. We want to thank Justine for her incredible contribution and wish her every success in the future.”

The publisher also noted that under Cullen’s reign, Elle has “consistently developed unique ways to excited and connect with new audiences”.

Last year, Elle shot its cover and its editorial images using an iPhone 7 Plus in what it said was an Australian first. The magazine also partnered with Twitter to provide readers a real-time perspective on magazine production.

Cullen said her time working on Elle had been a dream come true.

“In Elle, we created a fashion magazine unlike any other on the Australian newsstand, one that questions the norm and champions the new, for a woman who cares about what she thinks and what she stands for just as much as what she wears,” she said.

“To have the honour of editing it at this powerful moment in time for all women has been a dream come true. But after 25 years in publishing, 10 years as an editor at Bauer and more than five years helming Elle, the time has come to make the decision that feels right for me and my family. Thank you to everyone I’ve worked with over my career at Bauer, and especially to the wonderful Elle team, in whose highly capable and talented hands I leave this brand that I continue to love so much.”

Cullen is a finalist in the Editor of the Year (consumer/custom) category at this week’s Publish Awards. Final tickets can be purchased here.
