Essential Media sells drama division to FremantleMedia with co-founder Ian Collie to depart

Australian production company Essential Media and Entertainment has sold its drama production division, Scripted, to FremantleMedia.

The deal will see the departure of Essential director and co-founder Ian Collie, who also led Scripted’s Australian operations.

Collie will be launching his own scripted content production company, Easy Tiger Productions, which will be majority owned by FremantleMedia.

Essential Media was founded in 2006 by Collie, Chris Hilton, and Sonja Armstrong to produce documentaries, feature films, factual series, and lifestyle programming.

Its scripted drama division has worked on series including Rake, Doctor Doctor, The Principal and Jack Irish.

Beyond its scripted division, the company produces shows such as Body Hack with Todd Sampson, The Living Universe, and Uncharted with Sam Neill.

Essential Media and Entertainment’s CEO Chris Hilton said he was pleased to see Essential Media’s scripted division find the “additional resources” it needed to prosper, under its new owner Fremantle Media.

“We wish Ian Collie the very best in the new venture,” Hilton added.
