Eurovision near miss sees audiences swell while House Rules overhauls Masterchef

Australian audiences tuned in in droves to see Australia’s entry Dami Im pipped by the Ukraine to take out the Eurovision Song Contest yesterday morning.

Audiences spiked for the public broadcaster SBS at around 8:30am with 527,000 viewers as the live voting reached a crescendo, with Aussies ultimately left disappointed as Im surrendered the lead she held after the judging panels after viewers voted for the politically-charged Ukrainian entry.

However, the early popularity and news coverage meant audiences for the replay at 7:30pm dropped to 407,000, after the show pulled in 592,000 last year.

It also helped SBS to a share of 9% for the night, well up on its usual efforts of around 6%, according to OzTAM overnight metro ratings.

Elsewhere in prime-time House Rules’ second whole house reveal out-rated Ten’s Masterchef for Seven, grabbing 920,000 from 7:00pm while Masterchef mustered 847,000 from 7:30pm.

However, neither could challenge The Voice which had 1.361m from 7:00pm, easily leading Nine to a ratings win for the night with 23.1%, with Seven second on 18.7% and Ten fourth at 12.6% behind ABC at 12.9%.

Seven News beat Nine News at 6:00pm with 1.346m viewers against 1.335m.

Shark Tank, which featured former Tongue staffer Gary Elphick knocking back an offer for his start-up Disrupt Surfing, grabbed 449,000 viewers at 9:00pm.
