Mark Wahlberg and Ian Thorpe head new Optus push targeting small business
Optus is targeting small and medium-sized business (SMBs) with a new campaign partnering with actor and Wahlburgers fast-food chain founder, Mark Wahlberg.
The new drive, which also features Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe, will support the opening of 126 new stores specialising in offering support for SMBs as Optus works to position itself as a player in the business market alongside Telstra.
The campaign represents the first work for Optus by With Collective after a major reshuffle of its agencies.
Thrive PR + Communications, UM and Amobee all also worked on the campaign.
What’s with Optus’ obsession with celebrity? From Usain Bolt to Ricky Gervais to Mark Wahlberg…can you find anyone with less in common?
1. Spell check: It’s “Wahlburgers”
2. This burger chain only has 7 stores in North America, and doesn’t even have a presence in Australia – how is the local market supposed to put this story together if the brand he created has no relevance here?
3. Marky Mark is hardly synonymous with “Small business success” – more like modelling topless in Calvin Klein underwear and producing an elaborate fictional primetime Bro-Show
4. Is there not someone Australian who could have epitomised the same values and story that Optus wanted to tell? Ruslan Kogan, Janine Allis…???
Ian Thorpe is an Australian
THANK YOU! Exactly my thoughts, clearly a campaign planned by a Marky Mark fan surrounded by Yes People.
Here’s another one for ya
5. Wahlberg’s “heritage” is also full of beating up minorities for no reason.
Wonder if they checked Mr Wahlburgers past record? What a fantastic brand ambassador. Nice work With…..

Loved Ian in this ad. He did a great job.
Embarrassed Optus paid Whalburg who once blinded a man in one eye. Not a role model.
As they say, ‘Yeah–no.’
