Ex-NRL execs join VMG-owned sports management firm: ‘We’re building something special in the marketing and media space’

A sports management and advisory firm owned by local media company, Venetian Media Group (VMG), has locked in two big names.

Aspire Sports Management has confirmed the “game changer” appointments of two former-NRL executives – ex-general manager of clubs and NRL, Jonnie Stewart, as general manager, and the former Brisbane Broncos CEO, Paul White, as an investor and shareholder.

Stewart and White have been friends and colleagues for some time, with Stewart even working under White during his time at the Broncos. In fact, it was White – who has consulted for VMG over the past three years – who encouraged Stewart to take on the top role at Aspire, which focuses on commercial partnerships, legal and contractual, mentorship and support, brand building, negotiation and deal fulfilment, and social media management.

“He’s a very respected executive and has a unique ability to develop superior relationships across the sporting, sponsorship, media and commercial areas, which is vital to attract talent and then maximise brand and personal potential,” White said.

Stewart added: “I feel privileged to be backed to lead the Aspire business.

“More Australians are playing and watching sport than ever. It’s a growing and complex industry with endless opportunities for athletes and brands, Aspire is set up to drive commercial outcomes for both.”

VMG CEO, Michael Fishwick said the two appointments highlight that the group is “building something special in the marketing and media space”.

“In welcoming Jonnie and Paul to Aspire and VMG, we’re not just adding two of the industry’s most respected sports executives; we’re infusing our team with unparalleled expertise,” Fishwick said.

“Their passion for the industry and belief in doing things the right way—prioritising integrity in our dealings with athletes, brands, clubs, and leagues—mirror our own values.”

As well as its work with Aspire, VMG houses out-of-home agency, Revolution360, marketing consultancy, Yakkazoo, billboard company, Captive Vision Outdoor, media planning and buying agency, Frontier Media and digital agencies, Sillyfish and Digital Native.
