Facebook and Youtube’s face-off with their end-of-year wrap up videos

At the end of the year the big social media platforms like to garner a little more attention in the press with their takes on what has happened over the last 12 months.

Today two of the lesser talked-about platforms Facebook and Youtube released theirs, and its fair to say one is the antidote to the other.

Facebook’s is a slickly-cut two-minute walk through the top ten most talked about things on the network this year. The problem is most of them are deeply depressing.

Yep, that’s gay marriage, #thedress and then Europe’s refugee crisis, the Paris terror attacks, Nepal earthquake, various people that died and some of the US shootings. Yikes.

And on the opposite end of the spectrum is Youtube, which appears to have dropped some form of pill and thrown everything happy that has happened on the site in the last year at a 7-minute long video.

There’s also plenty of cameos from the likes of John Oliver, James Corden and a whole heap of the platform’s biggest stars, mostly dancing along to some of the biggest pop hits of the year.

And there’s even a walk down memory lane with some of its biggest videos of the last decade recreated by some of the stars.

In its first four hours the video has been viewed 4.4m times.
