Fairfax Media launches competition to celebrate launch of compact weekend papers

Fairfax Media’s Australian Publishing Media division has launched ‘The Ultimate Compact Weekend’ competition to celebrate the launch of the compact weekend editions of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

The announcement:

Fairfax Media’s Australian Publishing Media division has launched ‘The Ultimate Compact Weekend’, to celebrate the launch of the weekend editions of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age moving to a compact format from tomorrow.

The Ultimate Compact Weekend offers a prize package valued at more than $80,000, including five star travel and accommodation packages in Freycinet, Tasmania; South Australia’s Barossa Valley; qualia at Hamilton Island and Kangaroo Island’s Southern Ocean Lodge.

The trade promotion asks entrants to take an interesting photo of themselves or a friend holding one of the new Sydney Morning Herald compact newspapers while doing something they enjoy on the weekend. Photos can then be uploaded at http://www.weekendcompact.com.au/.

Each week for four weeks a winning photo will be chosen and people can enter as often as they like.

“This promotion is designed to appeal to our media agency and advertiser clients and create awareness of this historic move to a weekend compact format for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. It will also encourage our agency partners and our clients to explore the new changes and interact with the great content both newspapers provide, as well as offer the chance to win a premium, exclusive weekend away,” Fairfax Media National Trade Marketing Director Chelsea Wymer said.

Prize packages include airfares, private transfers and guided tours to tourism icons such as MONA in Hobart, a wine blending experience at Penfolds and a private scenic helicopter flight in the Barossa Valley, private sailing charter on the Whitsundays and a marine tour on Kangaroo Island.

The competition opens on 3 March with winners drawn on 12 March for Saffire at Freycinet, 19 March for The Louise at Barossa Valley, 26 March for qualia at Hamilton Island and 2 April for Southern Ocean Lodge at Kangaroo Island.

The move to compact for the weekend editions follows extensive consumer research into readers’ preferences for their weekend papers as well as a better understanding of the role newspapers played in their weekend behaviour.
