Federal government announces companies and universities receiving young journalist subsidies

Media outlets Southern Cross Austereo, NBN and Grant Broadcasters are among 41 regional companies to receive funding for journalism cadetships, the Federal government has announced today.

The grants, part of the government’s $60m Regional and Small Publishers Jobs and Innovation Package comes as publishers wait for news on their applications for the first tranche of the long-delayed innovation fund.

Under the training component of the package, the Government has committed to support up to 200 journalism cadetships over two years in regional and remote areas with a matching wage subsidy of up to $40,000 for each journalism cadet.

The first funding round sees $1.8 million is being provided to successful grant recipients, creating 70 cadetships across the 41 media organisations.

At the same time as revealing the cadetship winners, the government also announced sixteen regional universities offering scholarships worth up to $40,000 under the Regional Journalism Scholarships Program which forms the education part of the package.

Minister Mitch Fifield said in announcing the scholarships: “The scholarships are aimed at students from rural and regional areas so they can acquire skills and knowledge necessary to operate in the contemporary news media industry and stay living and working outside the major cities.”

“This funding is important to ensure the journalism profession continues to attract Australia’s best and brightest individuals, and encourage them to stay working in regional communities.”
