Final State of Origin clash drops 450,000 on last year’s decider

The third NRL State of Origin clash pulled in just over 2.1 million metro viewers for Nine last night, half a million fewer than the first two matches and 450,000 less than last year’s decider, figures from OzTam have shown.

State of Origin game 1 2014

The figure includes 92,000 in Perth where the game was broadcast on Gem. Sydney numbers hit 951,000 while 742,000 Brisbane viewers tuned in to see Queensland grab a consolation win in the three match series.

Brazil’s spectacular capitulation against Germany in the World Cup semi final meanwhile was witnessed by 551,000 stunned viewers from 6am on SBS One, making it the 21st most watched program yesterday.

The lower Origin rating is unsurprising given the dead rubber nature of the game. NSW had already wrapped up the series after winning the first two matches.

Pre-match analysis was watched by 1.43m with numbers falling to 1.29m for the post-match autopsy. Both figures include those watching in Perth.

Last years State Of Origin decider drew 2.468m  viewers for Nine.

The NRL clash helped Nine take almost 33 per cent of the overall audience, with Seven’s 13.1 per cent edging out Ten which captured 12.9 per cent.

Masterchef held its own despite stiff competition from Origin, attracting 971,000 metro viewers, with Offspring drawing 738,000. The shows came ninth and 12th in the rankings.

Seven screened The Iron Lady at 8.30pm, the movie based on the life of Margaret Thatcher, which captured 312,000, followed by the third and final instalment of Autopsy.

The celebrity  post-mortem series again failed to find an audience with only 133,000 interested in the life and death of Anna Nicole Smith as the program only just made it into the top 100 most-watched program of the day.

The series has bombed for Seven, with only 644,000 tuning in to see the coverage of Michael Jackson’s death, falling to 470,000 for last week’s episode on Whitney Houston.

Nine won the news ratings with a metro audience of 1.28m, falling to 1.17m from 6.30pm. Seven news drew 1.25m.

ABC’s audience share hit 11.2 per cent with SBS One on 4.8 per cent.
