First Dog on the Moon to contribute to The Monthly
Political cartoonist First Dog on The Moon will appear in The Monthly magazine from next month in a regular column.
A new cartoon, The Rum Corps, has been developed for the Monthly and will appear exclusively in the print edition. Subtitled “Exciting adventures in police corruption”, each month of The Rum Corps will feature a different historical episode of Australian police corruption.
First Dog is the work of cartoonist Andrew Marlton. He was best known as a daily cartoonist for email newsletter Crikey, but was poached by The Guardian in March.
The first instalment of The Rum Corps features the story of Graham “Chook” Fowler (portrayed as a chook), who died last year. He was a NSW policeman based in Kings Cross in the 80s and 90s, who was eventually charged with corruption, but is perhaps best remembered for a sham incident when he “slipped” on a strawberry milkshake that had been spilt on the floor of the Sydney City Police Station, in order to win a payout.
Monthly editor Nick Feik said First Dog would bring colour, humour and gilt-edged satire to the publication every month.
“First Dog on the Moon is a self-described National Treasure and we couldn’t agree more,” he said.
I don’t understand First Dog – is it supposed to be funny?

I don’t understand First Dog either. Usually unfunny and not telling me anything I don’t already know.

Adding cartoons (even if it is only one) is a big positive for The Monthly. Excellent news.
