Flip flashmob: the director’s cut
Flip has now posted a more highly produced video of Friday’s much discussed Bondi Beach dancing flashmob stunt.
It follows the swift posting of the original video, shot from one spot, so that the brand would have something to put online immediately.
This strategy divided those commenting in Mumbrella’s original story on the Flip flashmob, with some saluting the execution and others critical of the initial camerawork.
Footage from the event will eventually be used as a cinema ad.
The campaign was created by Razor, Text 100 and Curious.
Better production values or not, you can’t polish a turd – particularly one that’s been lifted from another man’s toilet.

parala… My expertise doesn’t lie in consumer promotions and marketing. But from my ignorant perspective, the view count on YouTube seems to speak for itself…
I’m sure you’re way more qualified and probably have every right to call it a turd…
Given mUmBRELLA gives us a great platform to ‘further’ our industry, why not use your valuable time to educate us on how things can be improved? Rather than critiquing what seems a first in Australia and seems for now to have delivered results…
Suppose if the product doesn’t walk off the shelves they’ll come back and consult you for a rescue initiative…
(btw – I used to work for Text 100 and still know some of the team there, but my interest in this debate is parla’s likelihood to substantiate his/her opinion, not Text 100’s reputation. Free speech comes with responsibility)

Still doesn’t work for me. I think essentially it doesn’t improve on the original. I don’t like the focus being on a fat guy I feel that’s a cheap shot (“hey, look, the fat guy’s dancing, how embarrassing, oh wow everyone’s dancing with him!”) – feels unorganic and cliched. Also I think the music is a bad choice, it lacks the “excitment energy” that the T-Mobile ad (and the Stockholm Thriller salute, to cite another reference) had.
The Bondi thing is about all it has going for it, because it’s a landmark that will be hooked on to internationally, although it’s a bit passe as a choice.
Also, where’s the product mentioned in the video? Just having it in the title isn’t sufficient, you want a hero at the end.
Essentially I feel this video lacks character. One and a half stars from me. Margret?

Oh I’d give it three, just because I want to be Margaret

Yep, I like it I think it could do well for them and captures the fun that Flip’s about. I want one.
Ok, the been done before argument is relevant for the industry, but for the majority of Australians this will seem fresh, new, fun and entertaining.

Why oh why didnt we get this as the first viral?
The backlash wouldnt be like it is right now if this were the first offering!
Sure theres no branding and it misses the mark but with better production more than 1 terribly panning camera this is a solid effort BUT…….
The first viewing is what will always remain in the consumers mind and it was ordinary!

I actually really like it. I don’t care if it has been done before. It’s a lot of fun and defo made me smile. Quite uplifting all in all. Would I buy the product, probably not but has it made me aware of a product that I have never heard of before – definite yes.

Oh so bland. I just dont get this flash mob thing. What was original and new a year ago is looking old, faddish and completely staged now with no link at all to any brand or branding. Worse, after the stuff in the US and UK, what we can do seems very very b-grade. Rather like watching Aussie ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ after seeing the US show.
And imagine being on the beach that day. Surrounding by people dancing like an 80’s rock estedford rehursal to that very mundane song. I’d have thrown sand. In faces. Oh, and did those guys taking photos on their mobile phone get arrested? Will this make Bondi Rescue? Hmmm the big questions….

Much better – I like this. Makes the camera look decent instead of crappy. Wish this had been the first one out….
OK so it isn’t original, but you don’t have to be original to make an impact. You just have to entertain and deliver a message.

Here was our attempt back in 2007.
All punters, no paid dancers.
One news article and one forum thread.
Boom! instant traffic problem

Police shut us down at the end of the vid.
“why are you kids dancing to no music?”

Still doesn’t work for me … better quality but looks staged and no spontaneity even though that it what it is trying to depict.
I looked at the 2007 vid … oddly I started humming Fun Boy Three’s old hit The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum).

Love how they try to be funny with the fat man but then all of the girls are tiny and in bikinis. Yawn. What were they trying to achieve? Nothing? Oh well, they succeeded at that.

Still crap – the whole point of a “flashmob” is that it’s spontaneous, flash in the pan, exciting, get’s everyone involved…
I appreciate everyone’s view but it looks fake, staged, badly videod – a poor-man’s attempt.
Try harder next time and get a new idea

I want to like it… and I definitely don’t hate it but I still feel let down. It goes to show that if you want something to look natural and effortless – you have to work bloody hard at it.
