Former News Corp exec Kim Williams steps down as chair of The Copyright Agency

Former News Corp executive Kim Williams has stepped down as chair of The Copyright Agency after six years. Dr Kate Harrison has been appointed as his replacement.

The announcement:

Copyright Agency Board Director, Kate Harrison, has been appointed as the organisation’s Chair.

Dr Harrison takes over the role from Kim Williams who has chaired the organisation for the past 6 years – and been a Board member since 2015. Mr Williams will step down from the Board on July 1, 2021.

Dr Harrison joined the Copyright Agency Board in March 2018, and has chaired the Board’s Copyright Committee. She is a partner at law firm Gilbert + Tobin with experience in copyright matters.

Mr Williams said, “Kate’s extensive management, legal and policy experience will be invaluable as the Copyright Agency continues to stand up for the rights of creators by licensing content, and advocate for policy settings that respect the rights of creators and support the production of Australian content. I am confident that the Copyright Agency will remain committed to working on behalf of its members to ensure fair payment for their work.”

Incoming Chair Dr Harrison said “I want to acknowledge Kim Williams for his exceptional stewardship of the Copyright Agency. Under his leadership the Agency has completely renovated all of its systems and processes, struck multiple agreements to ensure fair payment to creators, advocated for fair policy settings and launched actions in the Copyright Tribunal that are fundamental to setting the future copyright framework and ensuring payment to members.

“Kim has also made a very significant contribution to the work of the Cultural Fund which has gone from strength to strength under his leadership. The Board recognises and thanks Kim for his passion, commitment and drive in standing up for Australian writers, publishers, and visual artists.”
