Foxtel brings back Foxtel Go app
Foxtel has relaunched its mobile streaming app for subscribers, Foxtel Go.
The application, which was renamed as The Foxtel app last year, has returned to its original name, Foxtel Go, and now has HD streaming and support for Chromecast and AirPlay.
Foxtel Go initially launched in November 2012, allowing subscribers to its cable and satellite services to watch shows on iPads.
The new application has features including personal WatchLists, closed captioning and ‘continue watching’. The newly revamped app is part of Foxtel’s attempt to deliver greater value to its subscriptions. It comes a month after the subscription service announced the launch of a 4K channel.
Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany said the company was striving to “improve” the way customers enjoy entertainment.
“We got things started with our newly secured cricket rights that are set to bowl customers over with no ad-breaks during live play starting this November, and our recently announced 4K channel will bring the sights of sport, movies and docos to you like you’ve never seen this coming October,” Delany said.
“Today, we’re bringing a familiar name back to our mobile app, Foxtel Go, and giving it a high-def makeover while adding the ability for our multiroom customers to share it with big screens when you’re away from home.
“These changes are just the beginning as we continue to make the way customers experience Foxtel better than ever before.”
The Onion or Betoota Advocate couldn’t make this shit up as well as Foxtel does themselves. Feels like the decision making dartboard in the boardroom is getting a workout.

How does this differentiate from Foxtel Now?

Except that is has been well documented that Chromecast is only available to subscribers with multi room (ie. 2 or more set top boxes on their account already).
Hopefully it’s a bug they’ll correct, but that’s the current requirement.

With this app can I rewind live tv or fast foward and record programmes. I am in an area where there is no fitting for a box, and must rely on an on line connection, therefore I can see a drastic change in my lifestyle, with this set up changing the service I have been glad to receive from foxtel over many years.
Can you advise please.
Regards Ray.

Guessing there is still no AppleTV version despite Apple releasing a 4K model and them having most of the code already from their iOS apps. Instead your left to stream from a mobile device as a dirty hack #foxtelfails.

The geniuses at Foxtel have also only offered Chromecast as a bonus to multi-room subscribers. Makes total sense to offer them this “bonus” considering they have no use for it when it’s much easier to watch what ever they want through the additional IQ3 attached to the extra TV.

Foxtel Go is included with a traditional satellite Foxtel package, whereas Foxtel Now is an online streaming service you can sign up for without a set top box / satellite.

Foxtel’s streaming offerings continue to become even more frequent and half arsed.

Not a bug unfortunately, Foxtel are struggling to compete with themselves.
If they give all subscribers access to Chromecast, they need to write off $15-$25 for thousands of multiroom subscribers who will ditch the second box.
If they make Foxtel Now Full HD, they need to ditch the $10 per month fee on satellite.

If you can’t get a Foxtel box / satellite dish, you will need to sign up for Foxtel Now. You cannot record, though most shows would be available on demand. You can rewind up to 30 minutes on any channel, even if you haven’t been watching it, and you can fast forward within this 30 minute buffer though that’s it.

Most people have lost hope for an Apple TV app – on the Foxtel Community forums they are backtracking and saying that they delivered Foxtel Now on the Apple TV by adding Airplay support.

Foxtel TV, Foxtel Broadband, Foxtel Now, Foxtel Go, FoxtelKids, MyFoxtel app, FoxFlicks, Foxtel iQ4, Foxtel from Telstra OnDemand, the list goes on. Someone over there needs to do some serious brand consolidation.
One major reason Netflix works so well, and has become entirely ubiquitous is because it is just “Netflix”. Use whatever device you want. Pay for the lot in one transaction, one website, one mobile app, one tv app, zero headaches.

Not unless you get a second box.

Slightly incorrect. I have Foxtel Go and I don’t have a set top box or satellite. It’s essentially the same thing just renamed and repackaged. It will be interesting to see where they go with pricing. I only subscribe for the footy and I’m about to cancel that as it’s the end of the season.

Flog, when I’m comparing Foxtel (and it’s many variations) with Netflix, I’m not talking about price, or even comparing the product offering. I’m talking about the brand, and customer interpretation of that brand.
Foxtel “trying different things” as you put it, to me is a display of floundering, out of control, “seeing what sticks” business decisions. Confusing their customers, using them as guinea pigs, and charging them a premium for their sub par offerings in the meantime.
In comparison, many other companies in the same market (including Netflix) offer consolidated, uncomplicated products that are easy for customers to understand and enjoy. So easy my grandmother subscribed to Netflix from her iPad last month, and is now two seasons deep into Narcos.
Now if she decided she wanted Foxtel, which of the multitude of Foxtel sub brands does she type into Google? Where does she even start? And after she’s signed up for something and handed over her pension to Rupert, what are the odds that she’ll access to the right content for her?

How did you manage that? I thought Foxtel Go was bundled with Satellite or set top box subscription only and if you didn’t want to sign up to them, you had to get a Foxtel Now subscription?

Oh thank heavens – they’re finally moving into the 20th century. Such a relief.
