Free to air TV reaches 15.2m a day in 2013, while one in four stream shows online says Freeview survey
An estimated 15.2m people watched free TV per day across Australia last year, with the average person watching more than three hours of live television a day, a survey from Freeview suggests.
Time-shifted viewing also remained popular last year, as figures show 8.6 per cent of people recorded programs as well as watching live TV.
Freeview also picked up on the growing popularity of catch-up TV, with one in four people who have internet connections watching TV programs online.
Liz Ross, general manager of Freeview, said viewers are “more engaged than ever” with free television, adding: “Once again free to air has remained the television destination of choice for the overwhelming majority of Australians in 2013.
“This is thanks to the diversity and number of channels now available to all Australians, the high quality of content in general and the way Australians embrace locally made shows and the fantastic range of programs across all genres.
“It’s encouraging to see how Australian content is at the forefront of free to air programming. Every one of the 50 top rating programs last year was locally produced, with sport, reality and drama proving the most popular.”
Ross said one of the major developments in 2014 will be the launch of FreeviewPlus, the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) service which Freeview announced in November and will introduce later this year.
“We will soon be announcing more details about this significant milestone for TV in Australia,” she said.
So is it 15.2m a day or a year?

“With sport, reality and drama proving the most popular” Yes, because it’s not like we produce anything else- comedy, sci-fi, fantasy, or any other genre for that matter.

The worrying stat must be that 1 in 4 stream shows online. I’d wager that not much of that is done legally through Freeview channels. And given that such a large percentage is either legal through Apple TV or illegal through VPNs, then can you imagine the shift in numbers watching online if streaming was a legitimate vehicle?
25% for something that isn’t promoted or pushed? Wow.

Please let me know if I’m reading and understanding this correctly……….
In 2013 15.2 million people in Australia, out of a population of 23.3 million, watched some kind of FTA TV show?
So over 8 million people in Australia in 2013 did not once watch a TV show? Does anybody know of anybody who would not have watched a TV show in 2013?
Does over one third of our population refuse to watch television?

It is 15.2 per day (as an average). That does NOT mean that 8m didn’t watch any FTA TV show during 2013. The figure for Total TV would (of course) be higher.

It’s a daily figure that excludes regional W.A. Seems very low compared to the population.

“Does over one third of our population refuse to watch television?”
Does this survey include anyone under 15? There is a huge amount of people not watching FTA TV – Foxtel, Netflix, social media – etc etc.

Says who??
Says those with a vested interest in everyone believing this spin and nonsense.
Any marketer gullible enough to swallow these fantasy figures about legacy media, won’t be a marketer for long!

@Mike….or are taking your own personal subjective view on media consumption and tarring all Australia with it?
The death of television has been greatly exaggerated.
