Friday night TV: ABC beats Ten

Ten has once again found itself in fourth place behind Seven, Nine and the ABC, with its highest-rating program – Ten Eyewitness News at 5pm – pulling 451,000 viewers and failing to make it into the top 10.

No programs managed to crack the 1m viewers mark, according to OzTAM’s overnight preliminary metro ratings, with Seven News, the most-watched program of the evening seeing 869,000 tune in.

The most-watched non-news program for the evening was Seven’s Better Homes and Gardens, which drew 636,000 across the metro markets. Not far behind was ABC’s drama Broadchurch with 603,000.

Despite only airing in Melbourne and Adelaide on Seven’s main channel, the Sydney v Collingwood AFL match pulled 517,000 viewers overnight – 407,000 in Melbourne and 110,000 in Adelaide. While the game was on at Sydney’s SCG, 206,000 Sydneysiders were instead watching Better Homes and Garden’s on Seven’s main station at 7:30pm, with the game instead airing on 7mate.

Seven definitively won the night with a 23.0% audience share, ahead of Nine’s 15.2% and ABC’s 12.4%. Ten came in at fourth place with 9.3%, ahead of SBS with 6.5%.

When the networks’ multichannels were factored in, Seven still won the night with a 34.4% share and Nine remained in second with 23.8%. ABC’s multiple channels had an 18.0% share, Ten 15.3% and SBS 8.5%.

This isn’t the first time this year Ten has found itself behind the national broadcaster, but chief content officer Beverley McGarvey recently told Mumbrella the network will bounce back.

“We are very confident in the quality, appeal and potential of our next round of programs. We have been challenged in the pre-Easter period a few times over the past few years and always ensure our audience know when Masterchef Australia is on. This year is no different. Of course this challenging ratings period is making us extremely diligent in how we communicate and market our shows, but that is true every year,” she said.
