Gizmodo’s Rae Johnston to join Junkee as editor

Rae Johnston, editor of Allure Media’s Gizmodo, will join Junkee as editor from September.

Johnston was appointed to the helm of Gizmodo ten months ago, replacing Campbell Simpson. She is also the co-host of ‘That Start Up Show’ with Benjamin Law, and hosts Rewired on NITV.

Johnston will commence her new role on September 12

The journalist and TV presenter first joined Gizmodo in 2015, but prior to that worked as a television and radio presenter on shows including SBS Viceland’s The Feed and NITV’s current affairs program, The Point.

Johnston also previously held the role of commercial editor for Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker and Business Insider, all titles which sit within Allure Media.

Her new role reports directly into managing editor Rob Stott and replaces features editor Katie Cunningham, who is set to leave the company.

Prior to Cunningham, Junkee Media was led by editor Meg Watson, who departed last November for a role as associate editor at Crikey.

Tim Duggan, Junkee Media’s publisher, said he couldn’t wait for Johnston to join the team.

“Rae is a highly respected editor with a clear authority in the gaming, tech, science and entertainment space. This is a massively growing area for Junkee and the combination of Rae’s experience with our highly engaged audience is going to be very exciting,” Duggan said.

Johnston said the opportunity to bring her passion for tech, gaming and science to a new audience was exciting.

“It was always going to take something special to drag me away from Gizmodo,” Johnston said.

“I’m a massive fan of Junkee’s humorous, intelligent reporting, and I’m thrilled to be joining this legendary team as editor.”

Stott said she would make a great leader for the team: “Rae has a proven ability to create stories that will really resonate with Junkee’s audience, and her expertise in science, tech and gaming presents a great opportunity for us to expand our content offering.”

When she arrives on September 12, Johnston will become the latest editor to join the Junkee Media team, which runs Punkee, AWOL and Westpac-funded site The Cusp.

Earlier this year, BuzzFeed’s senior writer Tahlia Pritchard joined the company as the new editor of Punkee, while last year Junkee Media appointed Amelia Marshall as editor of The Cusp. BuzzFeed’s Rob Stott joined Junkee one year ago as managing editor of Junkee and Punkee. Earlier this year, AWOL was also on the hunt for an editor.  It has since appointed Mitch Brook, who came from Hardie Grant.

Junkee Media’s CEO and founder Neil Ackland will be speaking at Mumbrella Publish on September 20 about how youth audiences will change the shape of the industry. Click here to buy your ticket now.
