Google appoints senior news partnership leads in AUNZ

Google Australia’s Nic Hopkins and Shilpa Jhunjhunwala have been appointed to new roles where they will be responsible for working with news partners across Australia and New Zealand.

Hopkins has been promoted to the news ecosystem and programs lead for Australia and New Zealand, while Jhunjhunwala has been promoted to head of ANZ news partnerships and APAC news program management.

Previously, Hopkins was news lab lead. In his new role, he will be responsible for leading Google’s news industry relations and programs across APAC with a focus on transformation, sustainability and startups.

“The Asia-Pacific is home to an incredibly diverse and innovative news community. I’m looking forward to working with publishers and industry associations across the region to create a sustainable future for news in APAC, in whatever form it might take, and to help bring the ingenuity of APAC publishers to the rest of the world,” Hopkins commented on his promotion.

Jhunjhunwala was previously south APAC head- strategic product partnerships, news and publishing.  Jhunjhunwala will lead news partnerships across Australia and New Zealand, assisting news organisations grow their businesses via Google’s products and programs.

“I look forward to building upon the partnerships we have established with the news industry in the past two decades and to engaging with all parts of Australia and New Zealand’s vibrant news ecosystem. I hope we can work closely with our news partners to drive sustainable impact for their businesses,” Jhunjhunwala said of her promotion.

Meanwhile Uma Patel has joined Google to fill Hopkins’ role as news lab lead for Australia and New Zealand. In this role, Patel will be responsible for working alongside academics, newsrooms, nonprofits and community groups around Australia and New Zealand to tackle misinformation, grow diversity within the industry and support digital transformation for journalists.

Patel joins Google from FT Strategies (an innovation team from the Financial Times) where she assisted publishers around the world grow their business models including understanding and key metrics for success, developing paywall strategies, growing retention, audience engagement, B2B strategy and creating an experimental culture throughout the organisation.
