GQ editor Nick Smith to focus on publishing duties as Matthew Drummond joins as editor
NewsLifeMedia has named AFR Weekend editor Matthew Drummond as editor of men’s lifestyle brand GQ Australia, with editor and NewsLifeMedia group publisher of lifestyle brands Nick Smith moving to focus only on his responsibilities as publisher.
Joining the magazine in November, Drummond will be responsible for growing GQ Australia’s market position with Australian men across print, digital, social and events.
Drummond joins NewsLifeMedia after almost two years as editor of AFR Weekend. He has worked for Fairfax since 2005, during which time he the Australian Financial Review’s European correspondent based in Paris and was a joint recipient of the 2008 Walkley Award for best business reporting.
Smith said in a statement: “GQ is thriving across all platforms and it’s more relevant to the Australian male than ever before. I’m delighted that we have attracted someone of Matthew’s calibre and strong market understanding to lead GQAustralia at this time of investment in the business to further cement our leadership position in the men’s lifestyle category.
“Matthew is a highly experienced and talented editor with a fantastic knowledge of business, Australian culture, and most importantly what makes a great story. I’m thrilled he is joining the team to lead it to new heights in the market.”
Smith had been overseeing the editorial direction of GQ Australia along with the role of group publisher of lifestyle brands for the past three years. He has been editor-in-chief since August 2008.
Commenting on his new role Drummond said in a statement: “GQ is the finest in its class. It gives Australian men the best of everything. Having been a mad fan of GQ Australia for years, I’m thrilled to get the chance to help shape its future across all media platforms.”
Weird that there’s no mention in this piece of Ceri David, the editor of 3 years (more?) who was so successful for GQ, and left a few months back…

Don’t think it’s weird at all that Ceri isn’t mentioned. This is a story about new and current staff – she left months ago. How is she relevant to this story?
