Pay can be tax free when serving in a war zone. That’s why so many ADF members were/are dead keen to get to Afghanistan and environs.
Issues management (and PR) best practice is to base your strategy on truth. They admitted their mistake, corrected the fact and apologised to people they may have unintentionally offended. Done.
More like a good lesson in PR: when you make an honest mistake, own up quickly and apologise. It’s a shame more media outlets and politicians don’t follow this example.
“Dead keen”? Seriously?
My brother is currently serving in Afghanistan. I can assure you he would rather be at home with his family than in an active war zone with some tax benefits.
(Before you accuse him of being a wimp, his first three tours were in Iraq and he was awarded a CSC at last years Australia Day honours.)
The Gruen response is appropriate and in context. Well done.
