Guardians of the Galaxy take box office spoils as Aussie flick These Final Hours struggles

Guardians of the Galaxy has dominated the weekend box office, taking $6.552m across 586 screens and bringing in $3.971m more than its closest rival Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy.

The Marvel Studios film, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista as members of an intergalactic band of rebels, has made $8.827m since opening in Australia last week.

Johansson’s Lucy, which topped the Australian box office last weekend, was pushed into second place after grabbing $2.581m across 339 screens. The movie’s total Australian box office stands at $8.725m.

Australian end-of-the-world movie These Final Hours continued to struggle, only getting $78,904 across 164 screens taking its total Australian box office to $388,148.

In at third place was The Hundred-Foot Journey which took in $683,601 at the box office in its opening weekend.

Hercules saw its popularity plunge over the weekend, only managing $681,201 compared to last weekend’s $1.473m effort. Its total Australian box office is $7.181m.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes continues to hang around the top ten, claiming eighth place over the weekend after attracting a total of $438,103 across 134 screens taking its total Australian box office to $17.698m.
