Half Dome answers your questions on ‘unlimited leave’
Following a busy comments section on Tuesday regarding its new ‘unlimited leave’ policy, Half Dome‘s chief people officer Lisa Lie, and general manager Catherine Smith take to the Mumbrellacast to answer the questions that had been put forward.
Questions answered included:
How can you show it’s genuine and not a gimmick?
What happens to accrued leave when someone departs the agency?
How does it work with billable hours?
If one employee takes 9 weeks, and another 2, do their holidays carry over to next year? How do you make this a fair deal?
Did you consult clients? Some could end up better serviced than others.
Studies suggest less holiday is taken overall as a result, how do you ensure staff will actually give themselves a break?
What will you be looking at to determine whether this policy works or not?

I’ve got to say, listening to this interview did nothing to answer any of the comments. If anything it made is sound even more unclear. A train wreck of an interview and now it seems even more certain this whole policy and timing was a gimmick by this agency to snag some awards. Good luck to their staff or anyone hoodwinked into applying for a job there if the back of this gimmick.

I feel like Wow’s comments are a bit strong, but it definitely feels like rushed policy on the fly.
Despite saying it’s been in the works for six months, they didn’t really seem to be able to answer any of the questions with any conviction apart from those around legislated leave obligations.
In fact, it sounded like they were talking down to anyone who had the audacity to ask any reasonable questions.
