Honest Fox and the Ngarrngga Project team partner up for Indigenous knowledge website

Honest Fox – a technology and digital design organisation – has teamed up with the University of Melbourne’s Ngarrngga Project team to launch a website filled with resources on Indigenous history.

The announcement:

Melbourne based digital ideas company, Honest Fox in partnership with the Ngarrngga Project team at the University of Melbourne, have launched a new online resource helping educators teach First Peoples history in schools.

The timing of the website launch comes in the wake of the Nation’s historic referendum that failed to pass and threatened to divide Australia even further.

Ngarrngga – the Taungurung word meaning to know, to hear, to understand – is a unique project with the vision for all Australian students to have the opportunity to connect with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems, histories and cultures.

Collaborating with the Faculty of Education, Indigenous Studies Unit and Indigenous Knowledge Institute the online resources for teachers are rigorously tested and evidence-based giving educators confidence in the quality and integrity of the Ngarrngga resources, knowing that they have direct links to the Australian Curriculum.

Ngarrngga project director & associate dean (Indigenous), Faculty of Education, University of Melbourne, Professor Melitta Hogarth, sees Ngarrngga as an important step in uniting Australia.

“We imagine a world where every student has the opportunity to learn about these rich knowledge systems and histories, where educators can teach with intercultural confidence and where our education system creates a safe space for shared knowledge.

“Ngarrngga is an invitation to come along with us and explore one of the oldest continuous cultures in the world. It is a celebration of the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and we hope it is embraced by everyone in the education community,” she said.

The website currently has dozens of resources for teachers to browse – allowing them to filter by state and year level to ensure learnings are aligned to government set curriculum.

Honest Fox CEO, Dillon Bailey said working on the Ngarrngga Project helped his team connect with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in new ways.

“Working on the Ngarrngga Project opened our eyes to a lot of the challenges faced by educators; the fear they have to impart this knowledge is very real. Designing and building a website that helps overcome these fears was a great challenge.

“We’re excited to see the Ngarrngga Project evolve and help bring new confidence to teachers across the country as more resources are added in the years ahead,” he said.
